“You look like a dog’s breakfast,” Sarah said in a chipper voice when I stumbled downstairs.

“Morning to you, too,” I said, heading straight for the coffee. Thank you, Mr. Coffee timer settings.

“Weeee-eeell, someone’s in a special mood this morning.” Sarah flounced out of the kitchen, leaving me to wallow in my own misery. Up front, Sarah started takeing our clients in for the day. I should help her.

Did it make me a bad business owner to not want to be open today? To want to go right back upstairs and cover my head until the world went away? Or for a hole to open up beneath me and swallow me?

Either of those two options would be swell, thanks.

Instead, all I was doing was feeling sorry for myself.

Slugging down as much coffee as I could stand and not scorch the top of my mouth, I put on a brave smile and went to start my day.

Once I got moving, focused on giving my four-footed clients the best care and attention I could, my spirits started to lift. Listening to their gossip while in their kennels actually made me feel better.

There were times when I wished I could share this gift with everyone. There was something simple and innocent in the way dogs dealt with each other. There was no duplicitousness. No mean-spiritedness. Just simple order. A hierarchy.

It made dealing with them so much easier.

By lunch, I was feeling almost myself again. So much so that my sister picked up on it and called Jolene to come have lunch with us at the deli.

“Need to talk about it?” Sarah asked as we enjoyed our hoagies and chips.

I munched on my deli-style pickle in thought. “Nah. I’m just an idiot and I have an apology to make. I’m not really used to being in this position. I mean, I’m used to pulling a boneheaded move and apologizing. This time, I really stepped in it bad and I’m not sure how to pull it out.”

“You know, Naomi, sometimes just saying ‘I’m a bonehead and I’m sorry’ goes a long way,” Sarah said.

“It can’t possibly be that easy.”

“Consider giving it a try. You can’t possibly mess this up any further, right?”

I sighed heavily. “Have you met me?”

“I have faith. But you know you can’t ignore it.”

“Actually, I can.”

Jolene rolled her eyes at me. “Now you’re being an idiot again. Suck it up, buttercup, and go make your apologies. Before you go back to work.”

She really did know me too well. And in this case, it was uncomfortable how well she knew me. “Fine. I’ll…fine. I’ll stop by your shop and get him a fresh cup and a danish. Do you still have danishes?”

“Usually not this late in the day but it’s worth a shot.” She leaned in close to me and gave me one of those looks that was eerily reminiscent of Gramma. “Don’t put this off.”

“Fine. I said I would do it.” We needed a change in conversation stat. Luckily, I was saved when Clare DuFore entered the deli.
